Wiki

This Manual of Style is intended to provide a framework that keeps the wiki consistent for the users and editors of this wiki. By doing things this way, anyone can see where information may need to be added when future episodes of the story are released. Shawn Lenore has kept her characters consistent and familiar, the least we can do is build the wiki in the same fashion.

These guidelines are not all encompassing, not at all. Other policies will be created, when they are needed. They can be changed with a consensus of editors or if it's just plain too obvious. Others will be deleted when they stop being useful.

There will not be any consequences for not following these policies as long as you acted in good faith. After all, theses aren't so much rules as guidelines. That being said, it would be better if the policies were followed.

For the purposes of this wiki, the following manuals are a summary of the most important guidelines for the How to be a Werewolf Wiki, and will be used to guide and inform the writing of this wiki – to be used as the authority of last resort:

These reference materials are encyclopedic in nature, and you are not expected to read either or both of them in their entirety. Mostly just use them to answer questions.

(For the purposes of this article, How to Be a Werewolf will be known as HtBaW.)

Grammar and punctuation[]

When writing articles. it is important to follow these rules of the English language:

  • Don't use netspeak or any similar slang. We are compiling an accurate resource for HtbaW fans.
  • Make your writing easy to understand. You don't need to fill it with big words just to make it sound smarter, especially if you're not certain how the word should be used.
  • Vary your words. When writing, try to vary the words you use and the length of your sentences. It makes things more interesting.
  • Capitalize words when appropriate. (See below.)
  • Use correct punctuation. (See below.)
  • Know the difference between homophones: there, their, and they're; you're and your; here and hear; it's and its; who's and whose; two, too and to.

Capitalization[]

When naming an article, the first letter will always be capitalized due to technical restrictions imposed by the wiki software; there is no way to not capitalize it, the system will do it for you. It should be like this anyway, except in the case of a brand name that begins with a small letter, such as iMac, iPod or eBay.

If the name of the article is a name, such as Red Moon Café, Ross Landscaping, Inc., John Smith, all starting letters should be capitalized that are part of the name. If the article has an extension but still uses a name, format it like John Smith's apples, not capitalizing "apples". So, unless there is a reason for capitalization, don't do it.

Generally, just follow what you learned in school; also, do not capitalize words like of, the, or, if, in, or and.

If an article name includes parentheses/brackets, it is asked that the content within said brackets, unless capitalized for good reason, be put in lowercase.

Capitalization examples chart
Proper naming Improper naming Reasoning
John Paul's computers John paul's computers Since Paul is part of the specific name, it should be capitalized
Nintendo of America Nintendo of america Not only is America the name of a specific country/continent, in this case, it is also part of the company's name
United States of America United States Of America Of should not be capitalized.
Items used in Dungeons & Dragons organized by rarity Items used in Dungeons & Dragons Organized by Rarity Organized is a verb and Rarity isn't proper, heretofore, those words do not need to be capitalized.
Charmed (series) Charmed (Series) Series isn't proper, therefor, the word does not need to be capitalized.

Punctuation[]

Make an attempt to use, but not overuse, these most common punctuations: commas, periods, quotation marks, and apostrophes.

In addition to basic punctuation, it is important to know how to punctuate titles. Titles are always either in italics or inside quotation marks.

Italics[]

Italics are used for large works like games, movies, comics and books.

Examples

To use italics on Fandom, place two single quote marks before and after the title such that Werewolf becomes Werewolf

These are single quotes ('), not double quotes ("). Alternately, highlight the title you want to put in italics with your mouse and click the "I" button in the toolbar above the edit box (in between the B for bolding and chainlinks for website linking).

The above rule does not apply to headlines.

Bolding[]

The first time the name of the article is used in an article, and only the first time, it should be printed in bold text (done by surrounding the name with on each side). Also, if there is two names referring to the same thing for the article, both should be bolded for the first time. So, for example, if the articles name was "Foobar Rhinoceros" then, in the article, the first paragraph would go like this:

In the world of geology, the Foobar Rhinoceros is a fictional creature capable of transporting itself magically. The Foobar Rhinoceros, or, as it is called for short, "Foonoceros", enjoys eating meals of grapes, berries, and other random things.

Which, when coded in an article, the above would look like this

In the world of geology, the Foobar Rhinoceros is a fictional creature capable of transporting itself magically. The Foobar Rhinoceros, or, as it is called for short, "Foonoceros", enjoys eating meals of grapes, berries, and other random things.

Accepted Rules of Punctuation[]

There are several examples of punctuation controversies that need to be addressed, specifically:

  • Using an apostrophe (') to indicate a possessive noun.
  • Which HTML line break is the standard.
  • When to capitalize the word earth.

English style[]

As How to be a Werewolf is localized primarily in the United States and the comic uses American grammar, American English terms (such as color, realize, recognize, honor, and behavior) are preferred over terms used by other variants of English (such as colour, realise, recognise, honour, and behaviour). Exceptions are made if the Commonwealth spelling is the official spelling of a term in the comic.

Pronouns[]

In order to remain as professional and encyclopedic as possible, please refrain from using second-person pronouns such as "you" and "your". Instead, address them as "the reader" or use the passive voice instead of directly addressing the reader.

Neutral point of view[]

When adding content to pages, please ensure that it adheres to a neutral point of view, as this wiki is based only on canon created by Shawn Lenore and is subject to her interpretation alone.

Article layouts[]

Main article: HB:Article layouts

To keep the article pages somewhat consistent, the following layouts should be used for the construction of the articles of the wiki:

  • Character page layout
    Naming convention
    Character infobox template
Detailed description of the character, werewolf form (if applicable), witches powers (if applicable)
  • Faction page layout
    Naming convention
    Faction infobox template
Detailed description of the faction, pack or coven, the faction's history, its goals and expectations, and its current circumstances, when possible.

Sources[]

The primary source of information for this wiki is the content of the comic, i.e. everything contained in the comic pages.

The official Characters page created by the author and found at the website can also be used as a source, but when citing the page, the latest web archive version found at The Wayback Machine is to be used to ensure that, in the event of a change, the information won't be lost.

Author's comments should not be used as a source due to their impermanent nature and being subject to change without notice. The same applies to the author's Twitter account. The information is not archived and therefore eventually lost. However, the information provided is usually a clue to something coming up in the comic.

Referencing[]

The purpose of citing references is to be sure that credit is given where due. Place the footnote to the right of the information being cited; if it's placed at the end of a sentence, if possible place it after the final punctuation. Using the layouts represented will make the reference listing at the bottom of the page far easier to read and follow.

Links[]

To link to another article inside the How to be a Werewolf Wiki, you must put [[]] (square brackets) around it. To link to an article in Wikipedia, use wikipedia: and put the article title inside. Alternately, you may use the template {{t}Wplink}} to link to Wikipedia. If an article does not exist by that name, the link will show up as dark red, like this. External links will show up as blue.

You only need to link to another page once in any given article. Most of the time this is the first time that article's title comes up, but there are some exceptions to this.

Examples
  • Malaya
  • the Wikipedia entry for webcomics.
  • <Wolfsbane>

Please do not make unnecessary links to pages that do not exist. This will only clutter the list of wanted pages. This applies to any page, be it a blog, forum, article etc. In addition, it is not recommended to link words in a headline.

Images[]

As with anywhere else, image copyrights need to be respected. No image will be accepted that violates an owner's rights to the image.

That said, Shawn has stated that any images we capture, grab or edit either from the webcomic, the comment section of the webcomic, or her Twitter feed are free to use IN THIS WIKI ONLY! This type of license is an Author's Permission license. The images are to be captured and used in a manner that does not distort the meaning of the image, nor are the images to be modified or defaced in a manner that might be considered disrespectful, obscene, profane or otherwise offensive.
